Since its settlement by British colonists in the 17th century, the North Fork of Long Island, New York has attracted artisans of all types, from cabinetmakers to clockmakers and builders to boat-wrights. Beginning in the mid 19th century American artists began to explore the area in depth, visiting its picturesque towns and village, its untouched landscapes and pristine coastlines. Later, many of these visiting artists built or bought properties on the North Fork, and made it a place to call home.

THE EDITORS:

GEOFFREY K. FLEMING is the Director of the Southold Historical Society. He specializes in the art and history of Long Island and is the author of several books, catalogs, and articles concerning the subject, including Lemuel Maynard Wiles: American Painter and Gladys Lee Wiles, N.A.: Rival of Her Father.

SARA EVANS is a respected editor and writer who has written for the New York Times, Town & Country, House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living, and a host of other publications. She is the co-author of The Outdoor Living Room, published by Clarkson Potter, and is the East Coast Editor of Art of the Times magazine.

AMEI WALLACH, is a noted art critic, author, filmmaker, and television commentator. She was for many years an on-air art essayist on the MacNeil/Lehrer Newshour and chief art critic for New York Newsday.
